Sheriff Craig Webre announced on April 20 that the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will participate in the Buckle Up in Your Truck campaign from April 18 to April 26, 2026. The campaign is coordinated and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

The effort aims to increase awareness of seat belt safety and reduce roadway fatalities. As part of this initiative, additional deputies will be assigned to patrols throughout Lafourche Parish. A dedicated seat belt checkpoint is scheduled for April 22, where deputies will check motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations as well as proper inspection tags and other potential violations.

Checkpoints are intended to raise public awareness about traffic safety laws and make highways safer for all motorists. “Checkpoints are designed to help raise awareness for these types of violations and make the highways of the parish safer for all motorists,” Webre said.

According to information shared by Webre, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in 2024 there were more than twenty-two thousand passenger vehicle occupant deaths nationwide, with nearly half not wearing a seat belt at the time of their crash. He also noted that airbags alone do not provide sufficient protection without a properly worn seat belt.

Webre said that improper use of a seat belt—such as placing the strap below an arm—increases risk during a crash for both adults and children.

The Buckle Up in Your Truck campaign reflects ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies across Louisiana to improve driver safety through education and enforcement.
