THIBODAUX, La. — Thibodaux Attorney David L. Landry (BA ‘69) is donating $10,500 to create the first endowed scholarship for history students at Nicholls State University.
The David L. Landry History Senior Endowed Scholarship will initially award $500 per year to rising seniors studying history at Nicholls. Landry, a former history teacher at Ursuline Academy in New Orleans, said he sees a need for history majors in society today.
“People need to understand history and government a lot better,” he said. “Having the knowledge in those areas is super critical. History does a great job of putting things into perspective by teaching you how to learn from the past, and how to think and look at themes. I think the Nicholls History Department does a great job with that and I’m happy to support them.”
Award recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA and will be selected by the Nicholls State University Scholarship Committee.
“We have had a number of strong history majors in the past who were deserving of a scholarship and now we finally get to award one,” said Dr. Paul Wilson, history department head. “I want to thank Mr. Landry for being such a supportive partner in this because we have good students here at Nicholls and good students in our history program.”
