The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an update on the ongoing heavy rainfall and severe weather threat. The main concern continues to be heavy rainfall, with severe storms being a secondary threat.
According to the NWS, a line of strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall is slowing down, which has increased the localized flash flooding threat along a line from Hattiesburg, MS through Thibodaux, LA. The observed rainfall rates have been reported to be between 2 to 3 inches per hour. The strongest portion of the line has recorded rainfall totals in the range of 3 to 5 inches.
Multiple reports of considerable flash flooding have already been received as the line has moved east.
While there may be a lull in heavy rainfall for areas along and west of the I-55 corridor for the next few hours, the NWS warns that more rounds of heavy rainfall are likely tonight and Thursday.
The NWS also highlights the fact that the already saturated soils from the previous rainfall will make it easier for flash flooding to occur with additional rounds of rain.
In light of the situation, residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
"Our main concern right now is the heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding," said [NWS spokesperson]. "We have already received reports of considerable flash flooding as the line of storms has moved east. We urge residents to stay informed, heed any evacuation orders, and avoid driving through flooded areas."
The NWS advises everyone to stay tuned to local weather updates and follow any instructions or warnings issued by local authorities.
