Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government (TPCG) is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents in anticipation of severe cold temperatures.
To provide assistance to those in need, TPCG will be opening a warming shelter at the Houma Municipal Auditorium on Monday, January 15, 2024. The shelter, located at 880 Verret Street, will be available to residents who require a safe and warm place to stay until the severe weather subsides. TPCG aims to prioritize the comfort and security of its residents during this weather event.
In preparation for their stay at the shelter, residents are advised to pack appropriately. TPCG recommends bringing food, water, and bedding to ensure personal comfort. Additionally, residents are encouraged to bring personal necessities such as clothing, medication, phone chargers, and personal hygiene products. Comfort items like books and games are also suggested to help pass the time.
For residents with pets, TPCG allows pets at the shelter as long as they are on a leash or in a kennel. Pet owners are responsible for bringing their own pet food and bowls to the shelter.
To facilitate transportation for those in need, Good Earth Transit will be coordinating pickups to the shelter. Residents can schedule a pickup by calling (985) 850-4616 ext. 230. TPCG aims to ensure that everyone has access to the shelter, regardless of transportation limitations.
Ensuring the safety of roads and bridges is a top priority for TPCG. The Department of Public Works, together with the Houma Police Department and Houma Fire Department, will be patrolling the roads throughout Terrebonne Parish to ensure they are safe for travel during the severe weather conditions.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest information by monitoring TPCG's social media pages. TPCG will provide timely updates on any changes or developments regarding the shelter or weather conditions.
In times of severe cold temperatures, TPCG is committed to the safety and well-being of its residents. By opening a warming shelter, providing transportation options, and ensuring road safety, TPCG aims to minimize the impact of the severe weather event on the community.
