The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government has been informed by its mosquito control contractor that the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed a horse tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in the Savanne Road/Ellendale area on July 11, 2024.

In response to the positive mosquito samples, Parish President Jason Bergeron has authorized additional mosquito spraying in the affected areas. Truck-mounted sprayers will operate during evening hours starting July 17 and continuing through July 19, weather permitting.

Mosquito Control Services, L.L.C., the parish’s mosquito control contractor, will send personnel into the affected areas to search for vector mosquito breeding sites and treat them with bacterial and/or other larvicides. If entry into private yards is necessary, residents will be asked to sign a permission slip for inspection and treatment.

Residents in these areas will be informed about the heightened potential for encephalitis infection and advised on personal protection and yard sanitation. Informative literature regarding EEE, mosquito protection measures, and home maintenance tips to reduce breeding sites will be distributed.

For questions or concerns regarding mosquito control or spraying issues, residents may contact Mosquito Control Services, L.L.C. at (985) 580-1629. Additional information on protecting against mosquito bites can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at www.cdc.gov/eastern-equine-encephalitis/cause-and-spread.
