The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, with support from the State of Louisiana, has awarded a Louisiana Culture Care Fund (LCCF) grant to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center (SLWDC). This grant aims to support operations at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum.
Originally launched in 2020 to protect cultural institutions impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the LCCF continues to provide essential funding to cultural nonprofits across the state.
In September 2022, SLWDC took over management of the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum located in historic downtown Houma. The museum aims to elevate and preserve local stories and artifacts. It celebrates industries and traditions that define local culture, providing a historical record of how water has been utilized in South Louisiana. The museum's exhibits focus on preserving bayou community history and host several humanities-related events.
Among these events is the LouisianaLIT speaker series, which explores stories from local authors celebrating Louisiana culture. The Bayouside Gallery features rotating exhibits showcasing works from local artists and culture bearers. Additionally, a weekly Cajun music band performance is held every Tuesday for visitors and tourists.
Funding for the 2024 Louisiana Culture Care Grant has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
