The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center is set to host a free basket weaving workshop from March 17 to March 21, 2025. This event is part of the "Passing it On" workshop series and will be held at the Waterlife Museum in Houma. Tradition Bearer Geraldine Robertson will guide participants through the process of making split oak baskets, covering everything from gathering materials to constructing a basket.
The workshop will run daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., providing attendees with comprehensive instruction on this traditional craft. Robertson expressed her enthusiasm for teaching the complete process, which includes locating, taking down, and splitting trees in the woods. Participants will also learn how to gather weaving strips and posts made from split white oak material before fashioning their handmade baskets.
This educational event is organized in collaboration with the Helio Foundation and Rougarou Fest. It receives funding support from several organizations, including the Louisiana Folklore Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, and the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. The aim of this workshop series is to preserve and pass on one of the most endangered traditions.
