The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center is set to host its annual Swamp Camp for students in grades 4 to 7. The camp will run from June 2-5, June 9-12, and June 16-19, operating daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Samantha Hicks, the Program Director at the Wetlands Discovery Center, stated, “Our camps will educate students on the basics of Louisiana’s wetlands and the importance of the coast’s industries using daily field trips and activities.” Planned excursions include swamp tours, crabbing, and a visit to Greenwood Alligator Farm.
Campers will engage in various educational activities covering topics such as native plant use, land subsidence, water quality, fish anatomy, and estuary management. These lessons aim to foster an understanding of coastal preservation. Additionally, participants will learn about key local industries like oil and gas, fishing, and agriculture that contribute significantly to Southern Louisiana's economy.
The weekly tuition for the camp is $175, which covers all field trip expenses. There is no registration fee required. Enrollment is currently open with a limit of 25 students per week. Interested parties can find more information or apply by visiting www.slwdc.org or emailing shicks@slwdc.org.
