Louisiana virtual school embraces Acellus model for online courses

The Assumption Parish Schools’ Virtual Academy assistant principal, Craig Stephens, highlighted how courses through the Acellus program benefits students.

Acellus, which works to offer high-quality courses to more than 10,000 accredited schools in the U.S., is working to bridge the gap between homeschoolers and the quality of education that they deserve.

Stephens said in an interview with Houma-Thibodaux News that the courses for each grade level provide value to the students.

“A kid can start in first grade and graduate from high school using Acellus," Stephens said.

Acellus has helped Assumption Parish Schools’ Virtual Academy to reach students that it previously did not have valuable learning resources for.

“Originally, it was added on because we didn’t have a program that serviced students k-5,” Stephens said. “It’s actually helping them to be successful in learning.”

Assumption Parish is located in the south-central area of Louisiana and its virtual school caters to families wanting to provide their children with an excellent location, all of which learning from the comfort of their home.

While homeschoolers often are thought of as being behind their peers in one way or another, a number of studies on academic achievement show that these students can have highly positive outcomes.

According to Acellus’ website, “Acellus is a learning accelerator. It uses video-based lessons with cutting-edge technology to accelerate learning, elevate standardized test scores, reduce dropout rates and transition more students into careers and college.”

Courses offered include Mathematics, Math Fact Practice, Language Arts/Reading, English as a Second Language, Foreign Languages, Arts, STEM, Science, Career and Technical Education and Exam Prep.

Acellus is also the recipient of a number of approvals and affiliations, including A-G Approval by the University of California, AP Course Approval by College Board, California Learning Resource Network Certification and NCAA Approved Courses.
