Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government has been chosen as one of the recipients of the 2024 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Trash Receptacle Grant Program. This initiative, funded by the State of Louisiana and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, aims to improve the cleanliness of public spaces by providing trash receptacles to organizations across the state.

Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) distributed 628 receptacles to 71 organizations in 40 Louisiana parishes through this grant program. KLB Executive Director Susan Russell emphasized the impact of these receptacles, stating, "According to recent litter scans, KLB found a reduction of litter by 78% in areas where trash receptacles were properly installed and maintained." Russell highlighted the importance of providing accessible trash receptacles in public areas to encourage responsible disposal of waste.

As part of the grant requirements, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government will conduct a post-installation litter scan to assess the effectiveness of the new receptacles. Anne Picou, Cultural Enrichment Administrator at Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government/Houma Historic District Commission, expressed the significance of this initiative for the community, stating, "Litter is hurting our quality of life in Terrebonne Parish." Picou emphasized the role of decorative garbage cans with signage in attracting visitors to dispose of their trash properly, particularly in Downtown Houma.

The installation of five trash receptacles at both the Bayou Country Sports Park and Downtown Houma is expected to enhance the cleanliness of these public spaces and contribute to a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike. The data from the post-installation litter scan will be made public to showcase the impact of this project on reducing litter in Terrebonne Parish.

This collaboration between Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government and Keep Louisiana Beautiful underscores a shared commitment to maintaining a clean and beautiful community for all to enjoy.
