The Terrebonne Parish Tree Board is set to hold its 19th Annual Tree Giveaway on Saturday, February 15, 2025. The event will commence at 9 a.m. at the Main Library in Houma, Louisiana. This year, the giveaway will feature 200 container trees native to Louisiana. The specific types and sizes of containers will be revealed on the day of the event.

Participation is limited to residents of Terrebonne Parish, with a maximum of two trees available per household.

The program is supported by a grant from the Apache Corporation Tree Grant Program, which funds 75 container trees. The remaining 125 trees are purchased through the Tree Board. "Through their support, Terrebonne Parish citizens can benefit from the physical and mental health advantages of being exposed to healthy, lush trees."

Assistance in selecting and caring for the trees will be provided by members of LaTerre Master Gardeners, LSU AgCenter, and the Parish Tree Board. They will guide residents in choosing appropriate species and offer planting and care instructions.

The mission of the Tree Board focuses on planting and preserving trees on public properties owned by the parish. Their goals include enhancing stormwater mitigation, improving air and water quality, fostering economic development, increasing community livability, and promoting public appreciation for trees.

Regular meetings of the Tree Board occur on the third Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., held in the first-floor conference room of Government Tower. More information about the board can be found at tpcg.org/treeboard. Those interested in joining can find applications at tpcg.org/boardvacancies.
